Tutorial – Finding Neutral

Overview of the Motorcycle Gearbox

1. Understanding the Gear Layout

Most motorcycles use the 1-N-2-3-4-5-6 pattern:

  • 1st gear: one click down from neutral
  • Neutral (N): half-click up from 1st
  • 2nd to 6th: each one click up from the last

Tip: Neutral is between 1st and 2nd — not all the way up or down.

2. Using the Shifter

  • To shift down: press firmly down on the lever with your toe.
  • To shift up: lift the lever up with your toe.
  • Always close the throttle and pull the clutch fully before shifting.

3. Finding Neutral (Two Reliable Methods)

Method A — From 1st Gear (Best at a Stop)

  1. While stopped, pull in the clutch.
  2. Gently lift the shift lever a half-click upward.
  3. The neutral light (usually green) should come on.
  4. Ease the clutch slightly to test: the bike should not move.

Method B — From 2nd Gear (If You Missed Neutral)

  1. From 2nd, press gently down a half-click until the neutral light appears.
  2. Don’t stomp — light pressure helps you hit the “sweet spot.”

4. Troubleshooting Tips

  • If the bike won’t go into neutral, rock it slightly forward/backward while gently shifting.
  • Don’t force the lever; that can damage the gearbox.
  • Some bikes find neutral easier when rolling slightly or after warming up.
  • If all else fails, press the kill switch to turn off the engine and then find neutral. Some bikes don’t like to shift into neutral when the engine is running.
